A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has sentenced a 19-year-old teacher, Abdullahi Abbass, to life imprisonment for assaulting his nine-year-old pupil.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the ruling was delivered by Justice M. Osho Adebiyi of the FCT High Court, according to a statement released on Saturday by Vincent Adekoye, spokesperson for the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP.

According to the agency, Abbass, who worked at a private school in the Kwali Area Council of the FCT, lured the young boy after school hours on 19 March 2025 and committed the act.

The incident came to light after the pupil informed his mother, who immediately reported the case to the authorities, leading to Abbass’s arrest and prosecution.

The teacher was arraigned on two counts related to abuse and misconduct. Following a full trial, he was found guilty on 29 October 2025 under Section 2 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, which prescribes life imprisonment for such offences.

NAPTIP’s Director General, Binta Adamu Bello, commended the judiciary and law enforcement agencies for their swift response and cooperation.

“This judgment is a clear victory for justice and will serve as a strong warning to others. It reflects our commitment to protecting children and ensuring accountability,” Bello said.

She praised the Nigeria Police Force for its collaboration during the investigation and prosecution, adding that NAPTIP will continue to work tirelessly to safeguard vulnerable persons and uphold the rights of children across the country.
