This landmark collaboration marks the first-ever link between Nigeria and a UK community football club at the grassroots level, providing young Nigerian athletes and coaches an unprecedented pathway to international training, exposure, and professional development.
Under the agreement, Abbey Rangers FC will work closely with the LSSC to implement a comprehensive grassroots football development framework built around seven key pillars; talent discovery, coaching capacity enhancement, sports science integration, community engagement, policy advisory support, resource mobilisation, and infrastructure development.
The partnership goes beyond traditional football training, focusing on building a sustainable sports ecosystem that nurtures athletes holistically from technical education and mentorship to career progression and access to facilities.
The collaboration also includes statewide scouting programmes across schools and communities, providing scholarships, mentorship, and structured athlete support. An innovative mentorship scheme will link experienced coaches and players with emerging talents to foster discipline, skills, and career guidance.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, described the initiative as a “landmark step in Lagos’ mission to build a sustainable and inclusive sports ecosystem.”
“This partnership represents a deliberate effort to connect Lagos with global best practices in grassroots football development. Abbey Rangers brings proven expertise, professional networks, and a community-driven model that aligns with our vision,” Fatodu said.
“Through this alliance, we will create opportunities for budding athletes and build a knowledge bridge for coaches, administrators, and sports managers,” he added.
Fatodu commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his visionary leadership and consistent investment in youth and sports development.
“Mr. Governor has demonstrated that sports are not an afterthought but a strategic priority for youth empowerment, social cohesion, and economic growth,” Fatodu noted.
“His policies and personal passion for creating opportunities made this collaboration possible. We are deeply appreciative of his leadership and belief in the power of sports to build character and strengthen communities,” he added.
Chairman of Abbey Rangers Football Club, Mr. Nick Riley, hailed the partnership as a bridge between cultures and a vehicle for long-term sports development.
“We are proud to partner with Lagos State on this visionary initiative. Abbey Rangers has always believed that community football is a powerful tool for inclusion and opportunity,” Riley said.
“This collaboration allows us to share our grassroots development model with one of Africa’s most dynamic cities. Together, we will empower young athletes, raise coaching standards, and help shape the next generation of football talent,” he added.
As Nigeria’s first structured grassroots football partnership with a UK community club, the Lagos–Abbey Rangers collaboration represents a paradigm shift in sports development at the subnational level.
With the collective efforts of the government and international partners, the initiative is poised to transform Lagos into a model for sustainable sports excellence, ensuring that every young person, regardless of background or location can access quality training and opportunities for success.
