- Tinubu Approved Epe University Before Moratorium on New Tertiary Institutions – Dr. Alausa
- He attributed the delayed announcement of the Epe university to procedural factors within the National Assembly
- The institution was passed after lawmakers resumed from their 2025 annual recess
The Federal Ministry of Education has explained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for the establishment of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State, was granted before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) imposed a seven-year suspension on the creation of new federal tertiary institutions.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the clarification follows public concerns over the recent announcement of the Epe university, which appeared to contradict the government’s policy restricting the establishment of new schools.

According to the ministry, the President had already signed an executive memo approving the university months before the moratorium was adopted by the FEC.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa said the same memo also included approvals for the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kachia, Kaduna State, and the Federal University of Environment and Technology located in Tai and Koroma, Ogoniland, Rivers State.

He attributed the delayed announcement of the Epe university to procedural factors within the National Assembly, explaining that the bill establishing the institution was passed after lawmakers resumed from their 2025 annual recess.
Alausa reaffirmed that despite the timing of these approvals, the Federal Government remains fully committed to the seven-year freeze on new federal universities and will not consider additional proposals within that period.
He noted that the clarification was necessary to ensure transparency and prevent misinterpretation of government policy on higher education reforms.
