Justice Oyeyemi Ajayi of the Oyo State High Court on Monday sentenced six men to death by hanging for their roles in the conspiracy and brutal murder of a taxi driver, Akeem Shittu.

Justice Ajayi, after reviewing the evidence, ruled that the circumstantial facts clearly established a joint criminal plan that resulted in Shittu’s death.
“Based on the reasons provided for each of the defendants and the circumstantial evidence of murder, this court safely infers conspiracy in the acts that led to the death of Akeem Shittu,” the judge said.
He then sentenced each defendant to 20 years’ imprisonment for conspiracy and death by hanging for murder.

Earlier, state counsel Mrs. K. K. Oloso told the court that on April 10, 2024, at 8:30 pm at Elepe, Arulogun Road, Ojoo, Ibadan, the convicts and others at large attacked and murdered Shittu after an argument.
Shittu, a taxi driver, had reportedly hit a motorcycle carrying two passengers. Attempts to settle the matter led to a demand of ₦50,000 for treatment costs. He offered ₦8,000, which was rejected. He was stripped naked, escaped briefly, but was later caught, overpowered, and killed with a machete.
His taxi was later recovered in front of the shop belonging to one of the convict’s wives.
The offences violate Section 316 and are punishable under Sections 319 and 324 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
