Fresh fears have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as party stalwart Otunba Segun Showunmi warns that the opposition may slip into “legal extinction” if urgent constitutional steps are not activated before the National Working Committee’s tenure expires on December 8, 2025.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Showunmi issued an emergency advisory on his Facebook page, raising concerns that the PDP has entered its most vulnerable constitutional window in years.

He cautioned that the party risks drifting into a leadership vacuum that could lead to non-recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) unless decisive action is taken within the next 48 to 72 hours.

Showunmi described the situation as a self-inflicted crisis that could render the party legally paralysed if deadlines are ignored. He emphasised that once the law takes effect, “not even the President” would be able to salvage the party from the consequences of its own inaction.
His warning comes on the heels of the highly disputed national convention held on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, where Alhaji Kabiru Turaki was announced as National Chairman. Instead of healing old wounds, the convention has intensified internal rifts.
The Senator Samuel Anyanwu faction aligned with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike has already approached the courts to void the exercise, while former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido has filed a separate suit challenging its procedures.
Showunmi noted that the Damagum-led NWC’s tenure ends on December 8, yet INEC requires a mandatory 21-day notice before any leadership election, while the National Executive Committee (NEC) needs seven days’ notice to convene.

With the Board of Trustees inactive, he warned that the party currently lacks any stabilising structure to manage a smooth transition.
He urged the National Chairman to issue a NEC notice within 24 hours or risk being compelled by two-thirds of NEC members. He also advised immediate preliminary notification to INEC to avoid a technical breach.
Showunmi concluded that the PDP must, within 30 days, secure an interim leadership, reconstitute the BoT and adopt a transition timetable or face a total leadership blackout capable of crippling the party entirely.
