- Governor Dapo Abiodun has publicly claimed that his support was the deciding factor in Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s 2003 governorship victory and his 2023 election to the Senate.
- At a stakeholders’ meeting in Iperu Remo, Governor Abiodun officially announced his intention to contest the Ogun East Senatorial seat in 2027, promising “the best representation ever.”
- The governor expressed disappointment over what he described as negative publicity and media attacks sponsored by Daniel, despite years of political and personal assistance.
On Tuesday night in Ogun, Governor Dapo Abiodun opened up on his long-standing relationship with former Governor and current Senator Gbenga Daniel.
Eko Hot Blog reports that speaking during an APC stakeholders’ meeting at his private residence, Abiodun revealed that he handed over his political structures to Daniel in 2003 after losing the PDP primary, a move he says secured Daniel’s path to the Governor’s Office.
Governor Abiodun further disclosed that Daniel’s 2023 Senate victory was largely due to his personal intervention.

He claimed he had to persuade other top contenders, including Prince Segun Adesegun and Senator Lekan Mustapha, to step down for Daniel to emerge as the party’s candidate.
“If Senator Daniel now feels that the only way he wants to repay my years of support is to be sponsoring negative publicity against me, I leave him to his conscience,” Abiodun stated in a viral video.
In a direct move that sets the stage for a high-stakes political battle, Abiodun declared his own bid for the Ogun East Senate seat in 2027.
This declaration follows just hours after Senator Gbenga Daniel reportedly picked up nomination forms to seek re-election for the same seat.
Abiodun promised the people of the district that he would not be a “backbencher” but a vocal advocate for their interests in the Red Chamber.
The governor’s announcement marks a definitive end to any perceived alliance between the two political heavyweights in the Gateway State.
With both men eyeing the same legislative seat, the Ogun East senatorial contest is expected to be one of the most intense battles of the 2027 electoral cycle.
