The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) suffered another major blow on Tuesday as Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), becoming the sixth PDP governor to exit the party in 2025.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Fubara confirmed his defection during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt, saying he had secured President Bola Tinubu’s approval before making the move.

Explaining the reason behind his exit, the governor said the PDP failed to provide the needed protection during the prolonged political crisis in the state.
“I went to see Mr President not just for a personal visit, but for consultation on state matters,” Fubara said.
“The most important outcome of that meeting is that we now have full support to leave where we were because we didn’t get the protection we needed. The struggles we faced were due to the crisis in the state.
“If President Tinubu had not intervened, there wouldn’t be a Siminalayi Fubara today. We have the people and supporters with us. Our decision is to move to the APC and fully support the President’s second-term bid.”
Fubara’s defection comes days after Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, dumped the PDP for the Accord Party ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

His exit increases PDP’s governorship losses in 2025 to six. Those who have left the party so far include:
Peter Mbah (Enugu State)
Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom State)
Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta State)
Douye Diri (Bayelsa State)
Ademola Adeleke (Osun State)
Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers State)
There are growing indications that Taraba Governor, Agbu Kefas; Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang; and Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, may also exit the party in 2026, as internal cracks widen within the once-dominant opposition party.
