Google has released its Year in Search data for 2025, revealing the topics, people and trends that captured Nigerians’ attention throughout the year. The data shows a strong surge in searches around major news events, public figures, entertainment, technology and viral internet culture.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to Google, the rankings are based on search queries that recorded the highest growth compared to the previous year, offering insight into issues Nigerians were most curious about in 2025.
News related topics dominated searches during the year. Leading the list were the World Cup, the deaths of Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota and former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, as well as the Israel Iran war. These events generated widespread interest as Nigerians sought updates and background information.
Public figures also attracted significant attention. Searches surged around personalities such as Pope Francis, Hulk Hogan and Natasha Akpoti. Technology related interest peaked with increased searches for the iPhone 17.
Local figures featured prominently, with Natasha Akpoti topping the list of searched Nigerian personalities. She was followed by Eberechi Eze, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Chika Ike, Mr Eazi, Kemi Adetiba, Hilda Baci, Very Dark Man and Priscilla Ojo.
International personalities Nigerians searched for included Viktor Gyokeres, Alejandro Garnacho, Joao Pedro, Aaron Pierre, Tyler Perry, Michele Lamy, Larry Ellison, Kim Sae Ron, Teyana Taylor and Paul Biya.
Football dominated sports related searches, with interest focused on players such as Gyokeres, Garnacho, Xavi Simons, Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Joao Pedro, Andre Silva, Alexander Isak and Noni Madueke.
In entertainment, actors and musicians like Aaron Pierre, Chika Ike, Juma Jux, Mr Eazi, Kemi Adetiba, Teyana Taylor and Fola trended heavily. Searches linked to death and loss also ranked high, reflecting interest in figures such as Buhari, Diogo Jota, Pope Francis, Hulk Hogan, Uma Ukpai, Peter Rufai and Doyin Okupe.
Music searches included songs like Oluwatosin, Joy Is Coming, With You by Davido featuring Omah Lay, Laho by Shallipopi, and tracks by Teni. Film and television interest spanned productions such as Squid Game, Wednesday season two, Fantastic Four and To Kill a Monkey.

Nigerians also searched meanings of viral words including Achalugo, allegedly, labubu, demure, Ozempic and nepo baby. Trending recipes ranged from chinchin and sausage rolls to viral cocktails and rice dishes.
Google said the data reflects a balance between serious national and global issues and a strong appetite for entertainment, lifestyle and pop culture.
