The early-morning capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Saturday thrust one of America’s most secretive military units into the global spotlight.
According to United States (US) officials and multiple media reports, the operation that led to Maduro’s seizure in Caracas was spearheaded by the US Army’s elite Delta Force, a unit rarely acknowledged publicly and almost never discussed in detail.

The raid, which took place in the early hours of Saturday, marked one of the most dramatic deployments of US special forces in recent history.
President Donald Trump later confirmed the capture, describing it as a swift and decisive operation carried out without American casualties. Behind that outcome was the involvement of Delta Force — a unit designed precisely for such high-risk, politically sensitive missions.

An Elite Unit Built for High-Risk Missions
Findings by EKO HOT BLOG revealed that Delta Force, formally known as the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta (1st SFOD-D), is the US Army’s premier counterterrorism and direct-action unit. It was established in 1977 to give the United States a specialised capability to respond to terrorism, hostage crises and the pursuit of high-value targets.
The unit operates under the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), placing it at the apex of US special operations, alongside the Navy’s SEAL Team Six. Its operators are recruited from the most experienced soldiers in the US Army, particularly the Rangers and Green Berets, and must pass an exceptionally demanding selection process that tests physical endurance, mental resilience and tactical skill.
Delta Force is trained for counterterrorism, hostage rescue, special reconnaissance and precision raids. Its missions are often carried out deep inside hostile territory and are typically classified long after their completion.

How Delta Force Operates
Unlike conventional military units, Delta Force is designed for speed, secrecy and flexibility. It is believed to be organised into small, highly autonomous squadrons capable of deploying at short notice. Operators are trained in close-quarters combat, airborne and helicopter insertion, covert entry, explosives and advanced marksmanship.
In missions such as the operation that led to Maduro’s capture, Delta Force is usually supported by elite aviation units that specialise in night-time insertions and rapid extractions, as well as by US intelligence agencies that provide real-time surveillance and targeting information.
Reports indicate that Delta Force led the ground assault in Caracas, secured Maduro and his wife, and extracted them from Venezuela in a tightly coordinated operation. The speed and precision of the mission are consistent with the unit’s long-standing reputation for overwhelming force applied within a narrow time window.
A History of Secretive, High-Profile Operations
Although much of Delta Force’s operational history remains classified, the unit has been linked to several landmark US military actions.
Most notably, it played a key role in the 1989 US invasion of Panama, where American forces captured Panama’s military ruler, General Manuel Noriega, and transferred him to the United States to face drug-trafficking charges.
Delta Force has also been associated with operations in Somalia, Iraq and Syria, including missions targeting senior militant leaders. For example, the team was involved in the 2019 US special operations raid that led to the death of Islamic State (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in northwestern Syria. The raid was considered one of the most complex and high-profile special operations of recent years, demonstrating Delta Force’s role in targeting high-value terrorists and conducting sensitive strategic missions.
These operations, like the one in Venezuela, were characterised by their political sensitivity and the requirement for speed, secrecy and precision.
The capture of Maduro by Delta Force represents one of the rare instances in which the unit has been publicly linked to the detention of a sitting head of state. While the operation has triggered intense diplomatic and legal debate, military analysts note that Delta Force was uniquely suited to carry out a mission of such complexity and risk.

For decades, Delta Force has operated largely in the shadows, its activities known only in fragments. The events in Venezuela have briefly illuminated the role of the elite unit at the sharpest edge of US military power — a force designed for moments when Washington decides to act decisively and without compromise.
