- Officials said the strong turnout reflected growing public confidence in rail transportation
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) recorded a significant rise in passenger traffic across its operational routes as the Federal Government’s 50 percent yuletide train fare discount officially ended on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the festive concession, which ran throughout the Christmas and New Year period, drew thousands of commuters nationwide and further strengthened rail transport’s appeal as a safe, affordable and reliable travel option during peak seasons.

Findings showed that major railway stations experienced consistently high passenger turnout, with several services on key corridors operating close to full capacity, especially during the busiest travel window between December 24 and January 1.
On the Lagos Ibadan standard gauge corridor, departures were largely filled to capacity, a development NRC officials attributed to the fare reduction, improved service reliability and enhanced security arrangements at stations and onboard trains.

Similar steady passenger movement was recorded on the Abuja Kaduna and Warri Itakpe standard gauge corridors, as well as on the narrow gauge Mass Transit Train services. Boarding processes were orderly, while departures were mostly punctual throughout the exercise.
Officials said the strong turnout reflected growing public confidence in rail transportation, particularly against the backdrop of rising road transport costs and security concerns associated with long-distance festive travel.
Many passengers described the discount as timely relief that reduced the financial pressure of yuletide journeys while offering comfort, predictability and peace of mind.
Operational performance during the period was largely hitch-free. Ticketing, both online and at station counters, functioned smoothly, while customer service personnel were deployed to support commuters, including first-time rail users.
Security agencies maintained visible presence at stations and onboard trains, contributing to the smooth conduct of rail operations nationwide.
Management of the NRC commended the dedication and professionalism of its staff, noting that the success of the fare discount initiative demonstrated the rail system’s capacity to handle large-scale passenger movement when effectively incentivised and properly coordinated.
