Efforts by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to weaken Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s 2027 re election bid have reportedly suffered a setback following growing support for the governor from several All Progressives Congress governors.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that multiple APC sources said renewed tension between Wike and Fubara was triggered by the decision of influential APC governors to back Fubara’s second term ambition. Party insiders disclosed that the support has strengthened Fubara’s position within the party’s leadership, with many governors and national figures praising his project delivery across Rivers State.
Sources said the development has reduced Wike’s influence within the APC and complicated his attempts to shape political outcomes in Rivers State.
The crisis reportedly deepened after Wike’s camp allegedly supported former PDP National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, for the Imo governorship without consulting Governor Hope Uzodimma, chairman of the APC Governors Forum. The move was said to have angered Uzodimma and triggered mobilisation against Wike among APC governors.
A senior APC official said, “The plan is to weaken the FCT minister in his home state and reduce his political influence. Some APC governors mobilised their colleagues to support Fubara, and the result is the renewed hostilities.”
The APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, openly backed Fubara and asked Wike to resign his ministerial position and focus on his political interests. He also warned APC officials against taking sides in the Rivers crisis.
Wike, however, cautioned Basiru to stay away from Rivers politics during a visit to Oyigbo LGA, insisting the state remained a political no go area.

In response, Basiru said Wike lacked authority to interfere in APC affairs, stressing that the minister is not a member of the party and has no locus to issue directives.
