The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed widespread claims circulating online that a large bloc of elected officials, including governors and federal lawmakers, are preparing to dump their parties for the ADC amid Nigeria’s shifting political alignments.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the rumour, which spread rapidly on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, alleged that five sitting governors, 18 senators and several members of the House of Representatives were on the verge of joining the party.

The message even named Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Alex Otti of Abia, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and the Zamfara State governor as part of the supposed movement.

The viral post further claimed that the alleged mass defection would be officially unveiled at a grand rally billed for January 14, 2026, at Eagle Square in Abuja, a detail that heightened public interest and political speculation.
However, reacting to the development, ADC’s Deputy National Welfare Secretary, David Itopa, said the party had no knowledge of such plans.
Speaking to Vanguard, Itopa stressed that while the ADC remains open to welcoming Nigerians committed to national rescue, no formal discussions or arrangements involving the named politicians had been brought to the party’s attention.
As the defection story lost steam, political focus shifted to confirmed activities within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where internal consultations appear to be gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
PDP South-South Chairman, Emmanuel Ogidi, disclosed on Channels Television that a faction of the party has begun reaching out to influential political figures across the country.

According to him, meetings have already been held with former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida as part of efforts to reassert the party’s relevance.
Ogidi also revealed plans to engage other key political actors, including former vice president Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, both of whom have deep political roots in the PDP.
The developments have further fueled talks of possible realignments and broader opposition cooperation as preparations gradually begin for the next election cycle.
