Eyewitnesses said a loud explosion was heard before thick smoke and flames rose into the sky, forcing many students to flee their hostels in fear. Videos obtained by reporters showed students running to safety as dark smoke enveloped the area.
A student of the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa, Kuwhede Vincent, who witnessed the incident, said the fire started at about 8:00 a.m.
“It started around 8 a.m. We first saw heavy smoke and then fire coming from the company. The factory is very close to my hostel, so we had to pick our bags and leave because we didn’t know what would happen next,” he said, adding that no hostel was affected by the fire.
Vincent confirmed that firefighters were already on ground working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.
Reacting to the development, the Student Union Government (SUG) of OGITECH called on students to remain calm and strictly adhere to safety precautions. The appeal was contained in a statement signed by the SUG Secretary, Moses Josephine, and Public Relations Officer, Segbetin Sunday.

“The attention of the Students’ Union Government has been drawn to reports of a fire outbreak at the Ogun–Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ), Igbesa, which is in close proximity to student hostels around the Obanla axis,” the statement read.
“While relevant authorities are responding to the situation, the safety and well-being of students remain our priority. Students are advised to stay calm but vigilant, avoid unnecessary movement towards the affected area, remain indoors where it is safe, keep doors and windows closed if there is smoke, and switch off electrical appliances and gas sources as a precaution.”
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued on the exact cause of the fire.
When contacted, the Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, acknowledged awareness of the incident, saying, “Thank you for the information. I will work on it immediately.”
