The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has pushed back strongly against growing calls for his removal, insisting that public pressure or political criticism cannot determine his fate in office.
Speaking during a thank-you visit to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on Sunday, Eko Hot Blog gathered that Wike addressed party leaders, traditional rulers, women, and youths, stressing that only the President has the constitutional authority to appoint or remove him.

The minister’s remarks come amid heightened political tension in Rivers State and widespread speculation over his strained relationship with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The former Rivers State governor dismissed voices demanding his sack, describing them as political noise from individuals without influence. He argued that power in politics is earned through strategic strength and voter mobilisation, not sentiment or emotional appeals.
Wike emphasised the political relevance of Obio/Akpor, describing the council as a decisive force in Rivers State elections. According to him, the area’s voting strength has historically shaped outcomes in governorship and senatorial contests, warning that political actors who ignore this reality do so at their own risk.
“There is no emotion in politics; it is about interests and strength,” Wike said, noting that power is not handed over freely but taken through deliberate action. He likened political authority to global power dynamics, arguing that influence determines who makes decisions and who does not.
He further cautioned critics who underestimate Obio/Akpor’s influence, insisting that votes remain the ultimate weapon in politics. Wike maintained that political leaders who attack the council should be ready to face the consequences at the polls.

Reiterating his position on calls for his removal, Wike said such decisions rest solely with the President, adding that he remains confident in his performance as FCT minister. He stated that if his appointor believes he no longer adds value, then a decision can be made without external pressure.
Earlier, Obio/Akpor Local Government Chairman, Gift Worlu, praised Wike’s political legacy and influence, describing him as a major asset to Rivers State and Nigeria. He assured the minister of the council’s continued loyalty and support, noting that gratitude and consistency guide their political choices.
Similarly, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, reaffirmed the legislature’s backing for Wike and President Bola Tinubu, urging the minister to ignore distractions and focus on supporting the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The visit comes amid escalating political developments in Rivers State, as the state assembly recently initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct, further deepening the state’s political crisis.
