- Amupitan must prioritize sustaining democracy and rebuilding public confidence
- Citizens will no longer tolerate past excuses
- PDP will hold its national convention in Ibadan on November 15 and 16
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Senate to thoroughly screen Prof. Joash Amupitan, the nominee for Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, offered this advice at a news conference in Abuja today, Friday.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Ologunagba stressed that Prof. Amupitan must prioritize sustaining democracy and rebuilding public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.

He emphasized that strong institutions are crucial for ensuring credible and process-driven leadership transitions. “INEC is vital to the preservation of democracy in this country,” he said.

The PDP official hopes the Senate performs its duty responsibly and that Amupitan, if confirmed, will serve with integrity and public interest.
The PDP spokesman asserted that Amupitan must address Nigerians’ concerns and ensure elections are free, fair, and credible, noting that citizens will no longer tolerate past excuses.
Commenting on reports that Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, might defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ologunagba declared that the PDP remains stronger than any single individual. He dismissed defections as driven by “coercion, intimidation, and harassment,” not principles.

Ologunagba argued the 2027 election will be determined by ordinary Nigerians facing economic hardship—parents with hungry children and patients struggling with hospital bills—who will naturally gravitate toward the PDP.
Finally, Ologunagba confirmed the PDP will hold its national convention in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, assuring the public that all preparations are constitutional and inclusive, despite anticipating possible legal challenges.
