EKO HOT BLOG reports that the House, during its first sitting of 2026 on January 8, commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct.
The allegations include the demolition of the state assembly complex, spending without legislative approval and other related offences. Lawmakers had adjourned the session to January 15 to continue deliberations on the impeachment process.
However, by noon on Thursday, there were no signs that plenary would reconvene. A visit to the Assembly complex revealed no legislative activity or preparations for the sitting.
The House currently conducts its sessions at the conference hall of its official legislative quarters along Aba Road, following the demolition of the main assembly complex. The venue remained inactive, with no official explanation from the leadership on the failure to resume or a new date for plenary.
The delay comes amid growing internal calls within the Assembly to halt the impeachment process.
On Wednesday, two additional lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi, representing Obio Akpor Constituency II, appealed to their colleagues to conditionally discontinue the impeachment proceedings.
The lawmakers acknowledged that the governor and his deputy may have acted in ways that raised constitutional concerns but urged the Assembly to consider appeals from respected leaders across the state.
Their intervention followed similar appeals earlier in the week by Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo, who represents Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey, representing Degema Constituency. Both lawmakers had urged the House to temper justice with mercy in handling the matter.
As of Thursday afternoon, the Rivers State House of Assembly had yet to issue an official statement explaining the delay in reconvening or outlining the next steps in the impeachment process.

The development adds to the political uncertainty surrounding the ongoing impeachment move, which has continued to attract public attention and divided opinions across the state.
