EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this on Saturday in Abuja during the inauguration of a remodelled clinic at the scheme’s National Directorate Headquarters.
The event formed part of activities marking Nafiu’s first anniversary in office as the head of the NYSC.
In a statement issued by the scheme’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the additional mobilisation slots have already been captured in the NYSC’s 2026 budget.
Speaking at the event, Nafiu said the scheme plans to mobilise about 450,000 prospective corps members in 2026, while maintaining strict attention to their safety during deployment across the country.
“This year, we are mobilising about 450,000 prospective Corps members and, as much as possible, we avoid deploying them to red zones,” he said.
He added, “We remain mindful because we owe parents the responsibility of safeguarding the lives of their children.”
The NYSC boss also revealed that further provisions have been included in the Federal Government’s 2027 budget cycle to improve the welfare of corps members. According to him, the plans include upgrades to corps members’ kits as well as improved feeding and transportation allowances.
Nafiu explained that the remodelling of the headquarters clinic was part of ongoing efforts to enhance staff welfare and improve operational efficiency within the scheme.
He said several reforms had been implemented over the past year, including the successful conduct of the 2025 staff promotion exercise aimed at boosting career development and staff morale.
According to him, the management also facilitated payment of retirement benefits, introduced peculiar allowances for staff and conducted a recruitment exercise to strengthen the workforce.
The NYSC leadership also secured the donation of a Compressed Natural Gas bus to improve mobility for staff and corps members.
Nafiu further disclosed that the scheme is working to reposition its Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme through partnerships, including collaboration with the Enterprise Development Centre to digitise the SAED platform.
In his remarks, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, who inaugurated the clinic, said the upgraded facility would improve staff welfare and productivity.
“We are working to transform and reform the NYSC. We are doing everything possible to secure the future of our Corps members,” he said.

Olawande also advised corps members to avoid travelling at night due to security concerns, urging them to seek shelter in military barracks, police stations or NYSC offices if travel becomes late.
