EKO HOT BLOG reports that the approval was announced on Thursday in Abuja by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during the commission’s first regular consultative meeting with political parties for 2026.
Amupitan disclosed that the newly registered parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance and the Nigeria Democratic Congress. He explained that the decision followed a rigorous assessment of 171 political associations that submitted applications seeking registration.
According to the INEC chairman, only the Democratic Leadership Alliance met all constitutional and statutory requirements for registration. He added that the Nigeria Democratic Congress was approved following a directive issued by a Federal High Court, which ordered the commission to register the party.
Amupitan said the screening process was carried out in line with relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, stressing that the commission remains committed to upholding the law and promoting credible democratic participation.
In its founding principles, the Democratic Leadership Alliance said it would focus on governance reforms, youth participation, and social development initiatives. The party also pledged to promote transparency, grassroots mobilisation, and policies aimed at inclusive economic growth.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress described itself as a centrist political platform committed to social justice, equitable distribution of resources, and the strengthening of democratic institutions. The party said it intends to offer an alternative platform for Nigerians dissatisfied with the existing major political parties.
With the latest approvals, Nigeria now has 20 registered political parties.
