The Lagos State Government has shut down the Ladipo Spare Parts Market along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road, Apapa–Oshodi Expressway, following repeated breaches of environmental regulations.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the action on Sunday via a post on X, stating that the closure was due to indiscriminate refuse dumping on road medians and highways, as well as persistent illegal street trading within and around the market.

According to Wahab, the enforcement exercise was carried out by operatives of the Lagos State taskforce as part of the government’s zero-tolerance approach to environmental degradation and non-compliance with sanitation laws.

The Ladipo Spare Parts Market, located in the Mushin area of Lagos, is one of the largest auto parts hubs in the country. Authorities said the closure forms part of ongoing efforts to promote cleanliness, public health and safety across the state.
The market has previously been sanctioned over similar environmental concerns. In 2023, it was reopened after meeting specific waste management and sanitation requirements set by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.
At the time, the ministry stressed that markets across Lagos must strictly adhere to approved waste disposal practices, in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus agenda, which prioritises environmental sustainability and urban order.

Sunday’s sealing signals renewed enforcement by the state government amid concerns that compliance standards at the market had once again deteriorated.
