According to him, presenting a southern candidate would make it easier for the ADC to gain broader acceptance, particularly in the southern part of the country.

He explained that while the party could still field a candidate from the North, selling such a candidate to southern voters would be challenging given the prevailing expectations around power rotation.
Amaechi also advised the party to prioritise competence when selecting its flagbearer, stressing that the candidate must possess the capacity to govern, be of an age Nigerians can relate to, and command national confidence.
He further noted the importance of respecting the informal principle of power rotation, which he said currently favours the South, before power eventually returns to the North.

Despite his position on zoning, Amaechi maintained that regional origin should not ultimately divide the party.
He pledged to support whoever emerges as the ADC’s presidential candidate at the primaries, regardless of whether the person is from the North or the South.
