The General Manager of the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI), Tiamiyu Afusat, said the agency was nearing its target of retraining 2,000 drivers under the current programme. Participants underwent eye and vision tests as part of the initiative, which focuses on re-education and retraining to improve road safety standards across Lagos.
“Public education remains critical to road safety,” Afusat said, adding that the initiative aims to positively change drivers’ attitudes and behaviour on Lagos roads.

Amid rising cases of killings, car robberies, and attacks targeting app-based drivers in Nigeria, stakeholders have called for urgent measures to strengthen safety, legal protection, and workplace rights for digital transport workers.
Prof. John Omole made the call at the African Restorative Justice Summit in Abuja, highlighting that many drivers remain vulnerable due to weak protections, misclassification, and the risks involved in providing essential services. He stressed that restorative justice offers an alternative approach, focusing on dialogue, healing, and shared responsibility between drivers, platforms, and regulators.
Damola Adeniran emphasised that the initiative aims to amplify the voices of app-based transport workers across sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Nigeria.
