Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu spoke during the African Union High-Level Ad Hoc Committee for South Sudan, also known as the C-5 Plus Summit, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on the sidelines of the 39th AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government. The summit was chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The Nigerian leader highlighted the importance of national unity and elite consensus in South Sudan, urging African leaders to prioritise inclusive, peaceful, and transparent elections. He also underscored Nigeria’s role in the recently launched Regional Partnership for Democracy and the need to address insecurity and political tensions that threaten South Sudan’s transitional processes, including security sector reforms and constitution drafting.
Tinubu said: “We call on the government to consider the immediate and unconditional release from detention of the Vice President and other key opposition figures. It is also imperative to convene an all-inclusive national dialogue and reconciliation forum. All parties must engage constructively in the mediation process without preconditions.”
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to support the South Sudanese Transitional Government of Unity and its people in achieving lasting peace, stability, and development.
