Eko Hot Blog reports that this appointment marks a significant milestone as Oba Ogunsanwo becomes the first traditional ruler to assume this prestigious role.
The visit, a symbolic gesture of respect and congratulations, was attended by royal fathers, chiefs, and administrators from both LASU and the traditional institutions in Lagos State.
Notable attendees included Oba Adelani Adeniyi, the Aladegbawojo of Odogbawojo, and the Aladeuraka of Poka, who also congratulated the Alara and extended their goodwill messages.
Speaking during the visit, Oba Ogunsanwo expressed his deep appreciation to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the members of the state cabinet for the honor.
“This appointment came as a very big surprise, but I see it as an honor not just to me, but to the entire traditional institutions in Lagos State.
I am humbled to be the first traditional ruler to serve as Chancellor and also the 6th Chancellor of LASU.
This recognition has been applauded by my fellow monarchs, and we all commend the Lagos State Government for this initiative,” he said.
The Alara went on to outline his vision for LASU, emphasizing his commitment to taking the university to new heights, making it not only renowned across Africa but recognized globally.
“There are so many areas in need of improvement, and in the coming days, I will engage with the Pro-Chancellor and the top management to bring in fresh ideas.
One area I want to focus on is engaging the youth in the school, particularly in Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence.
I also intend to improve the welfare of both the staff and students,” Oba Ogunsanwo remarked.
He also highlighted the importance of collaboration, both locally and internationally, to further develop the university. “We intend to bring our goodwill to the table, working with kind-hearted Nigerians who can help in the development of the university.
LASU runs a multi-campus structure, and we want to ensure even development at all campuses, not just the main campus. We are looking to secure further assistance, and as a father figure, I will collaborate with other countries to bring in new opportunities for LASU,” he added.
The Alara emphasized his dual role as both a traditional leader and a bridge between the university and the government.
“I intend to give my best, bringing my past experiences from both government and private organizations. As a Royal father, I will ensure that LASU remains the best in all aspects, by God’s grace,” he concluded.
The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, emphasized the importance of the Alara’s appointment, noting that as an alumnus of the university, his involvement will bring a wealth of goodwill and experience to the school.
“We are truly proud to have a respected traditional leader like Kabiyesi as our Chancellor. We believe that his leadership will help elevate LASU to greater heights.
His ties with the university and his deep commitment to the development of education make him an ideal figure to steer the school’s growth,” Professor Olatunji-Bello remarked.
The Vice-Chancellor also expressed hopes for a strong and fruitful relationship between LASU and the Alara, anticipating his support in fostering communication between the university and the government.
“As a key figure in the state, we look forward to Kabiyesi’s advocacy and the potential for stronger collaboration.
His role will be essential in bridging the gap between the university and government, ensuring our progress in all areas,” she said.
Other royal fathers present during the visit included the Aladepekun of Odo-Egiri and the Orijeru of Igbooye, who all conveyed their congratulations and support for the Alara’s new role.
The visit ended on a high note, with all present expressing their hopes for a fruitful and collaborative relationship between LASU and the royal institutions in Lagos State.
