The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has unveiled a detailed traffic diversion strategy ahead of the first phase of the reconstruction and expansion of Ogunnusi Road in Ikeja.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the arrangements would allow the Federal Ministry of Works to commence construction on the stretch between Ojodu-Berger Bus Stop and the Mobil Filling Station Junction toward Ijaye/Agege, Eko Hot Blog reports.

According to the ministry, the project is part of a broader plan to rehabilitate and widen the 9-kilometre dual carriageway linking Ojodu-Berger and Mobil Junction in both directions. Phases One and Two are scheduled to run from March 6, 2026, through January 6, 2028.

Phase One will focus on a 4.5-kilometre inward section from Ojodu-Berger to Mobil Junction in the Ijaye/Agege direction. The work is expected to begin on March 6, 2026, and conclude by February 6, 2027.
During this period, vehicles will not be permitted within the designated construction zone.
To reduce congestion, the government outlined alternative routes for motorists. Drivers heading toward Ijaye/Agege via Ogunnusi Road from Ojodu-Berger will be redirected to share the Ojodu-Berger-bound carriageway in a contraflow arrangement for about one kilometre before merging back onto the main road.
As another option, motorists may take Dr Nurudeen Olowopopo Way, connect to Otunba Jobifele Way, proceed to Obafemi Awolowo Way, and then link Lateef Jakande Road to reach their destinations.

Truck and articulated vehicle operators travelling from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway toward Agege have been advised to reroute through Ojota and Maryland, then proceed via Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way to Kodesoh Street, link Oba Akran Avenue to Guinness Roundabout, and continue through Ogba Road to Pen Cinema.
Motorists moving from Ijaye/Agege toward Ojodu-Berger will still be able to pass through the corridor.
However, near the construction area, they will temporarily share a contraflow lane with oncoming traffic for roughly one kilometre before returning to the regular carriageway.
To manage potential disruptions, emergency towing vehicles will be stationed along the route to promptly clear breakdowns and maintain traffic flow.

The ministry urged road users to be patient, observe traffic signs and cooperate with officials deployed to manage movement throughout the construction period.
It noted that the temporary measures are necessary to ensure safe and efficient completion of the road upgrade, which is expected to improve travel conditions in the area.
The state government had earlier announced a similar traffic plan for reconstruction works on a section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway between Super Bus Stop and Ilepo Bus Stop, scheduled to last 12 weeks from March 7 to May 30, 2026.
