His appointment was unanimously endorsed by the Nigeria Police Council, chaired by the President. The council met at the Villa to ratify his nomination following the resignation of former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.
Unlike past appointments, Disu will not undergo Senate screening. Under the Police Act 2020, the Police Council is empowered to advise the President on the appointment of an Inspector-General.
Before his elevation, Disu held the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police. He will turn 60 in April 2026, the statutory retirement age for officers in the force.
The council meeting was attended by top government officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam, and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, among others.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Society for Criminology has urged the incoming IGP to prioritise reforms within the force. Its president, Oludayo Tade, called for the decentralisation of tactical squads to zonal commands to improve response time and operational efficiency.

The group also emphasised the need to improve officers’ welfare, invest in modern training, and strengthen collaboration among security agencies to address evolving security challenges.
As Disu prepares to take the oath of office, expectations are high that his leadership will bring renewed focus to tackling crime and improving public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
