EKO HOT BLOG reports that the resignations followed a directive issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, mandating political appointees with electoral ambitions to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive, in line with the Electoral Act and guidelines by the Independent National Electoral Commission, is aimed at ensuring fairness and transparency ahead of party primaries.
Below are five key appointees who have resigned to pursue political ambitions:
1. Yusuf Sununu
Former Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Yusuf Sununu, resigned to pursue a senatorial ambition in Kebbi State. He previously served as Minister of State for Education and was a two-term member of the House of Representatives.
2. Yusuf Tuggar
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, stepped down to contest the Bauchi State governorship election. A former ambassador to Germany, he also previously represented Gamawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
3. Saidu Alkali
Former Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, resigned in compliance with the directive. He is set to contest the governorship election in Gombe State under the APC.
4. Nasiru Gawuna
Nasiru Gawuna resigned as Chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria Governing Board. The former Kano deputy governor is expected to re-enter the state’s political contest.
5. Abdulrazak Namdas
Abdulrazak Namdas stepped down from the Niger Delta Development Commission board. The Adamawa indigene is reportedly preparing to contest the governorship election in his state.
