EKO HOT BLOG reports that Governor Yusuf had recently defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the African Democratic Congress, a move that has continued to generate reactions among political stakeholders.
Prior to the defection, Shekarau had criticised Rabiu Kwankwaso for describing Yusuf as a betrayer. In a video shared on his verified WhatsApp platform, Shekarau said the governor had the constitutional right to join any political party of his choice.
He maintained that Yusuf’s decision could not be regarded as betrayal, noting that Kwankwaso himself had previously changed political platforms.
Explaining his decision, Yusuf said his move was aimed at aligning the state with the centre of national governance to accelerate development.
The governor made the remarks during the 2026 Grand Rally held at Sani Abacha Stadium, where supporters gathered to welcome him into his new political fold. His position was also contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa.
Addressing the gathering, Yusuf said Kano remained too significant politically and economically to operate outside the influence of the Federal Government.
In a related development, Rabiu Kwankwaso has also moved to the African Democratic Congress. The former presidential candidate received his membership card in Kano, marking a new phase in the state’s evolving political landscape.
Kwankwaso registered at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, in Kano.
The event attracted several prominent political figures, including David Mark, Aminu Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Dino Melaye, and John Odigie-Oyegun.
