EKO HOT BLOG reports that their disengagement followed President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of new service chiefs on Friday. The new appointees include General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, while Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
According to the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, the reshuffle aims to strengthen Nigeria’s national security structure. The benefits for the outgoing chiefs are contained in the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service (HTCOS) for Officers and Enlisted Personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, signed by President Tinubu on December 14, 2024.
The entitlements include a bulletproof SUV or equivalent vehicle, replaced every four years and maintained by the military, and a Peugeot 508 or equivalent backup car. Each will also have five domestic aides — two cooks, two stewards, and a gardener — along with a security aide, special assistant, three drivers, and a standard guard unit of nine soldiers.
Additionally, the package grants free lifetime medical care in Nigeria and abroad, with officers of lieutenant-general rank entitled to treatment worth up to $20,000 annually. Retired officers also retain their uniforms, firearms, and escort privileges for official functions.
However, these benefits only apply if the officers do not assume another public office funded by the government.
