EKO HOT BLOG reports that a check on FIFA’s change of association platform showed that the request submitted on behalf of the player has been approved, formally allowing him to feature for Nigeria in international competitions.
Okonkwo, a product of Arsenal academy, previously represented England at youth levels from U15 to U18. He has now opted to commit his international future to Nigeria.
Nigeria’s football authorities sought clearance from FIFA as a precaution, despite the fact that all of Okonkwo’s appearances for England came in non-competitive matches. The situation is similar to that of Felix Agu, who made his debut for Nigeria without clearance after not featuring in competitive fixtures for Germany at youth level.
The Nigeria Football Federation had monitored Okonkwo’s progress over the years. Former president Amaju Pinnick had previously recommended him to then Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, who at the time believed the goalkeeper needed more top-level experience.
Now playing for Wrexham AFC, the 24-year-old has shown consistent improvement. He has also featured in Austria with SK Sturm Graz. This season, he recorded ten clean sheets in 37 league appearances for his club, which is pushing for promotion.
Born in London to Nigerian parents from Anambra State, Okonkwo is now eligible for immediate selection ahead of the next international window.
Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle is expected to include several fringe players in the squad for May’s Unity Cup, where Nigeria will defend their title against Iran and Jamaica.

Nigeria will also face Poland and Portugal in friendly matches in June, fixtures that could provide Okonkwo with an early opportunity to establish himself in the national team.
