President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has attributed Nigeria’s development challenges to the failure of past administrations to adopt a sustainable long-term planning framework, particularly in financing critical infrastructure, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Speaking on Tuesday while receiving a delegation of Enugu State stakeholders led by Governor Peter Mbah at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu said previous governments often relied on short-term funding to execute long-term projects, a mismatch that slowed national progress.

“What has been the problem in the past is Nigeria trying to finance long-term projects with short-term funding. We have not embarked upon serious long-term outlook for our country,” the President said.
Despite the challenges, Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s trajectory, noting that effective leadership at subnational levels is beginning to yield results.
He commended Mbah’s administration, pointing to improvements in security, infrastructure, education, and healthcare in Enugu State as clear signs that reforms are working.

“The results you have outlined are not abstract. They are evidence that reform is working, that difficult decisions are yielding real outcomes, and that Nigeria is moving forward,” he added.
The President also assured continued collaboration between the federal and state governments to drive development, highlighting projects such as the Port Harcourt–Enugu rail line and ongoing power sector reforms as priorities.
Tinubu emphasised the need for coordinated efforts across all levels of government, urging state leaders to extend development initiatives to local governments for wider impact.
“It’s not a one-man orchestra. It’s a collective effort at the national, subnational, and local government levels. Please do more for the local governments,” he said.
He further acknowledged the delegation’s political support and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering on its promises, stressing that unity and sustained focus remain key to achieving a prosperous Nigeria.
