The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has raised the alarm over a surge in impersonation and fake sting operations carried out by criminal elements posing as its officials.

According to the commission, one group operates around popular eateries and social spots in major cities, targeting unsuspecting youths. The suspects allegedly ambush victims, accuse them of internet fraud without evidence, and dispossess them of their valuables.
The EFCC said the impersonators often wear fake uniforms and transport victims to locations designed to resemble official offices in a bid to appear legitimate.
The agency also warned about another group that targets motorists, using fabricated accusations linked to vehicle number plates to extort money, sometimes while armed.
In addition, the commission expressed concern over online impersonators and content creators staging fake EFCC raids. These staged videos, often showing forced entries and property damage, could mislead the public into believing they are genuine enforcement operations.

The EFCC urged Nigerians to be cautious and verify claims involving its activities, noting that it operates through established procedures and official channels.
Reaffirming its commitment to tackling economic and financial crimes, the commission called on the public not to allow the actions of impostors to undermine confidence in its work.
