- President Bola Tinubu has officially endorsed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the consensus governorship candidate for the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
- The endorsement took place on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a meeting with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), led by Prince Tajudeen Olusi and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
- Governor Sanwo-Olu hailed his deputy as a “reliable partner,” stating that the President’s backing ensures the continuity of the vision for a “Greater Lagos.”
In a move that clarifies the political succession plan for Nigeria’s commercial hub, President Bola Tinubu has thrown his weight behind Dr. Obafemi Hamzat to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the endorsement marks a significant milestone for Hamzat, who has served as the deputy governor of Lagos State since 2019 and was previously a commissioner under Tinubu’s administration.

The announcement was made public by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who shared details of the strategic meeting between the President and the Lagos Governance Advisory Council (GAC).
The GAC, which is the highest decision-making body of the APC in Lagos, had already signaled its support for Hamzat just 24 hours prior, effectively positioning him as the party’s unified choice.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, expressing his support via social media, described the endorsement as a “bold statement of trust.”
He emphasized that Hamzat’s leadership would be instrumental in continuing the developmental projects initiated during their joint tenure. “I have no doubt that the vision for a greater Lagos we started together will have the leadership it needs to continue,” the Governor noted.
However, the consensus arrangement has not been without friction. Reports indicate that at least one other governorship aspirant, Seyi Ajose, has criticized the process, alleging that the “consensus” tag is a move to avoid competitive primaries.
Despite this, with the backing of both the GAC and the Presidency, Hamzat enters the 2027 race as the clear frontrunner under the APC banner.
