The development was disclosed in a statement released by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who said the decision was taken in the public interest.

According to the statement, the move aligns with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 and is intended to enhance efficiency and oversight within Nigeria’s midstream and downstream petroleum sectors, in line with the administration’s reform agenda.
Umar, the nominee, brings over two decades of professional experience spanning the energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors.
He studied Accounting at Bayero University and has also undergone executive training at Harvard Business School.

Until the Senate concludes its confirmation process, the most senior official within the NMDPRA will oversee the agency’s operations in an acting capacity.
The Presidency expressed appreciation to Mohammed for his service and wished him success in his future pursuits, while reaffirming its commitment to appointing capable leadership to key regulatory institutions.
The leadership change follows earlier developments at the agency, where its pioneer chief executive, Farouk Ahmed, stepped down in December 2025 before being succeeded by Mohammed.
