The gathering served as a platform for deliberation on cultural preservation, communal development, and the sustenance of age-long traditions that continue to define the identity of the Ijebu people within Lagos State and beyond.
Speaking at the event, the Onibeju of Ibeju Land gave an in-depth account of the significance of the Eebi Festival, describing it as a sacred cultural institution deeply rooted in the history and spirituality of the Ijebu people.
“The Eebi festival reminds us of our origins and serves as a means of communicating with our ancestors. It is not just a celebration but a spiritual exercise that connects the present generation with those who came before us,” he said.
The monarch stressed that adherence to such traditions has remained a unifying force among Ijebu Obas, fostering mutual respect and collective identity.
“It is one of the reasons all Ijebu-speaking Obas remain united. We do not take our traditions for granted because they define who we are and guide how we lead our people,” he added.
Also lending his voice, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu Land highlighted the broader impact of the Eebi Festival on the community, particularly in the areas of peace, prosperity, and social harmony.
“The Eebi festival brings blessings to the land. It is a period where we seek divine favor, promote unity among our people, and reinforce communal values that sustain development,” he stated.
He further emphasized the need for younger generations to embrace and understand the significance of such cultural practices to ensure their continuity.
In his welcome address, the host monarch, Oba Musiliu Abiola Oliwo, described the gathering as both timely and essential, noting that it goes beyond ceremonial engagement to fostering meaningful relationships among traditional rulers.
“This meeting is very important to us as brothers. It provides an avenue for us to strengthen our bond, understand ourselves better, and support one another in areas of need,” he said.
Oba Oliwo further noted that in a rapidly changing society, traditional institutions must remain united and proactive in preserving cultural values while also contributing to peace and development within their domains.
“When we come together like this, we are not only preserving our heritage but also building a stronger front to address challenges and promote the welfare of our people collectively,” he added.
The event featured rich cultural displays, traditional rites, and interactive sessions among the monarchs, creating an atmosphere of unity, reflection, and shared purpose.
It also served as an opportunity for the monarchs to discuss issues affecting their communities and explore collaborative solutions.
The convergence of Ijebu Obas at Odo Egiri stands as a testament to the enduring strength of tradition and the commitment of traditional rulers to uphold the cultural legacy of their people while fostering unity and progress across communities.
