EKO HOT BLOG reports that the governor made the disclosure during a crucial stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress held in Maiduguri ahead of the House of Representatives primary election scheduled for Thursday.
Zulum said he decided to sacrifice personal political ambition in order to preserve unity and stability within the party, stressing that peace among party members remained more important than pursuing a Senate position.
“Despite the overwhelming pressure from supporters and people close to me, I chose the party unity and cohesion over my personal ambition. I told them that I’m not vying for the Senate to maintain cordial relationships and allow peace to reign,” he said.
The Borno governor also urged aspirants contesting elective positions under the APC platform to embrace understanding, dialogue and cooperation in the interest of the party.
He called for wider consultations among party leaders and stakeholders to ensure the emergence of consensus candidates where possible, noting that such arrangements could help prevent internal divisions.
Zulum, however, maintained that although he supports consensus agreements, no candidate should be imposed on any constituency, as party members still retain the democratic right to contest positions.
He added that where consensus efforts fail, the party should allow transparent primary elections to determine candidates.
