Speaking during the inspection, Chairman of the committee and member representing Badagry Constituency I, Dr. Bonu Solomon, said the visit was necessary to ascertain the true state of work and verify the allegations.
According to him, the oversight exercise was approved by Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, to enable lawmakers obtain firsthand information on the progress and quality of the reconstruction.
Responding to concerns raised in some media reports, the project’s Quantity Surveyor, Mr. Adejoh Oshaba, dismissed claims of substandard work, describing them as premature and unfounded.
Oshaba explained that construction commenced about five weeks ago and is currently focused on the rehabilitation of the Point of No Return monument and the development of the walkway leading to the site.
“The reconstruction is still in its infancy. We have only commenced preliminary works, and it is too early for anyone to conclude whether the project is of good or poor quality,” he said.

He assured stakeholders that the project would be delivered according to specification and within the six-month contractual timeline, noting that his firm has successfully handled several projects for the Lagos State Government.
During the inspection, the project team conducted lawmakers and government officials around the site, providing updates on the different stages of the reconstruction.
Solomon stressed the importance of community participation in the project and urged the contractor to maintain a healthy relationship with residents and traditional leaders in the area.
He specifically called on the Baale of Gberefu Island, Chief Semande Hungbo, and other stakeholders to actively monitor the project and ensure quality standards are maintained throughout its execution.
The lawmaker commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for approving and funding the reconstruction, describing it as a major step towards preserving Badagry’s historical heritage and promoting tourism development in the state.
He also praised Speaker Obasa for approving the committee’s inspection visit and expressed satisfaction with the quality of materials and level of work observed at the site.
Also speaking, a member of the committee and representative of Agege Constituency II, Mr. Abdulkareem Jubreel, described the Point of No Return as one of Lagos State’s most significant tourism assets and urged the contractor to maintain high standards and meet project deadlines.
Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Adebopo Oyekan-Ismaila, expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded so far, while officials from the Ministry of Works commended the pace of work and encouraged the contractor to sustain quality delivery.
In his remarks, the Baale of Gberefu Island thanked the lawmakers and government officials for the inspection visit and assured them that the community would continue to monitor the project closely.
He stated that the work carried out so far met the expectations of residents and expressed optimism that the completed project would further enhance the historical significance and tourism appeal of the Point of No Return.
