However, Yirenkyi emerged as Ghana’s hero in the 94th minute, scoring the decisive goal to hand his side a winning start to the tournament.
The result sees Ghana join England on three points in Group L after the Three Lions defeated Croatia 4-2 earlier in the day.
The victory provides a significant boost for Ghana ahead of a difficult second group match against England.
The Black Stars will face England on Tuesday, June 23, in Boston, with kick-off scheduled for 4 p.m.
Panama, meanwhile, will look to recover from the defeat when they take on Croatia in their next Group L fixture.
