The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has introduced a new movement code for empty containers as part of efforts to improve port operations and reduce traffic congestion along the Apapa and Tin Can Island port corridors.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the authority said the movement code will serve as a unique identifier generated by holding bays for every empty container uploaded to the Electronic Call Up (ETO) platform.

According to the NPA, truck drivers transporting empty containers must now obtain the movement code from designated holding bays before proceeding to the ports. The code must match the details captured on the ETO platform before trucks will be granted access to port terminals.

In a notice issued to stakeholders, the authority said the new requirement is now mandatory for completing the truck to container matching process.

The NPA explained that the initiative is aimed at ensuring each truck is assigned only to its designated empty container, eliminating multiple container allocations, improving traffic management and enhancing operational efficiency around the ports.

The authority noted that the new measure forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the electronic call up system, facilitate the seamless evacuation and return of empty containers, and improve compliance with port access procedures.

According to the notice, the movement code will also prevent the practice of matching trucks to unrelated containers simply to secure earlier positions on the ETO platform before requesting changes close to port entry.

The NPA urged all stakeholders to comply with the new directive to support more efficient port operations and reduce congestion within the nation’s busiest port corridors.
