2027: INEC displays Tinubu, Shettima’s credentials

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the statutory public display of the academic credentials and personal particulars submitted by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential and vice presidential candidates for the 2027 general election.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the commission said the exercise, which began on Saturday, was conducted in line with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which requires INEC to publish candidates’ particulars within 21 days of receiving their nomination documents.

“Form EC9 contains the credentials, personal particulars and affidavits submitted by candidates sponsored by political parties,” INEC stated.

Documents displayed at INEC offices nationwide detailed the academic and professional backgrounds of Tinubu and Shettima.

According to Tinubu’s Form EC9, the President obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University in the United States, which he was awarded with honours on June 22, 1979.

The form also contained his National Youth Service Corps records, indicating that he served in Oyo State from December 1982 and was demobilised in November 1983.

His employment history listed three organisations. He worked with Mobil Nigeria Limited from 1983 to 1992 before leaving due to career advancement.

He later served as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007, completing his tenure in accordance with the law. The document also listed the Federal Government of Nigeria as his current employer since 2023.

Tinubu’s primary and secondary school attendance were recorded as “0000” on the form, while his university qualification was listed with a specific year.

His personal details listed his date of birth as March 29, 1952, his birthplace as Lagos, his residential address as No. 4, Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi, and his occupation as politician.

Shettima’s Academic Records

Shettima’s documents provided details of his educational background from primary school.

His Certificate of Primary Education, issued by the Ministry of Education of the defunct North Eastern State, showed that he attended Lamisula I Primary School between 1972 and 1978.

The document indicated that he finished second out of 22 pupils in his final year, with English, History and Religious Knowledge listed among his strongest subjects.

His West African Examinations Council result, obtained at Government Secondary School, Potiskum, in June 1983, showed six credits and passes, including distinctions in Religious Knowledge and Economics.

Shettima subsequently attended the University of Maiduguri, where he graduated with a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture in August 1989.

He later obtained a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan.

His NYSC discharge records indicated that he served between October 1989 and October 1990.

INEC said members of the public are entitled to apply for certified true copies of nomination forms and other documents submitted by candidates.

The commission also said members of the public could seek legal redress where allegations of false declaration or forgery arise from information contained in the documents.

The development comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to INEC’s revised timetable, campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to commence on August 19, while campaigns for governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will begin at a later date.
