Emphasizing the critical role of young Nigerians in driving socio-economic transformation, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, Minister of Youth Development, pointed out that the youth constitute over 70% of the country’s population.

With more than 130 million young people, Nigeria possesses a significant demographic advantage that, if properly nurtured and invested in, can become a powerful force for progress.

Acknowledging the persistent challenge of youth unemployment, Olawande noted that despite existing obstacles, the government has made considerable strides in addressing the issue.

The Renewed Hope Youth Strategic Blueprint seeks to build on these efforts and pave the way for a more prosperous future for Nigeria’s youth by fostering innovation, promoting job creation, and empowering the next generation of leaders.

He stated, “The youth unemployment rate has dramatically decreased from a concerning 12.55% in 2020 to a remarkable 5.84% in 2023, showcasing the effectiveness of targeted policies and initiatives designed to empower young people.”

Despite a slight increase in youth unemployment rates, the Minister of Youth Development acknowledged the need for sustained efforts to maintain progress and accelerate growth.

He called for continued donor support to drive investments and develop innovative programs that equip young Nigerians with essential skills for success in today’s competitive job market.

Olawande also highlighted the importance of nurturing a growth mindset among youth, especially in the age of social media and digital technology.

He encouraged reshaping attitudes and behaviours to enable young people to adapt and thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

The Minister further noted the potential to reform government institutions, such as the Ministries of Youth, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre, transforming them into central platforms for driving youth development policies in the 21st century.

Representatives from key donor agencies, including the African Development Bank and the Islamic Bank, participated in the event, affirming their commitment to youth empowerment.

Dr. Osubor Gregory from the African Development Bank emphasized that every project supported by the organization would directly benefit young people, demonstrating a united effort towards a brighter future for Nigeria’s youth.

“The African Development Bank is determined to ensure that every project directly benefits youth, fostering their growth and potential for a brighter future,” he stated.

Ibrahim Suraju of the Islamic Bank highlighted their dedication to supporting programmes that foster skill development, entrepreneurship, and innovation, which are critical for sustainable economic growth.

“These elements are not just important; they are essential catalysts for driving sustainable economic growth. Together, they can pave the way for a brighter future,” Suraju stated.
