Transfer: Liverpool Sign Barcelona Defender Ronald Araujo
The defender will cover Liverpool’s defensive shortage caused by injuries.
Liverpool can make the transfer permanent for €55 million.

Liverpool have completed the signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on a season long loan deal, with an option to make the move permanent for around £47.14 million (€55 million).

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the 27 year old Uruguay international joins Liverpool as a major defensive reinforcement following Ibrahima Konate’s move to Real Madrid and a growing injury crisis that has left the club short of senior centre backs.

Under the agreement, Liverpool will not pay Barcelona a loan fee but will cover Araujo’s full salary for the season.

The defender also agreed to take a pay cut to facilitate the transfer.

Araujo excited by Liverpool move

Araujo has been handed the No. 33 shirt at Anfield and described the move as an important step in his career.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Araujo said: “I can’t wait to get started. I’m very, very happy. I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I’m excited to meet my teammates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated and really up for getting going.

“I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take. As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly.”

Araujo provides defensive reinforcement

Araujo can operate as both a centre back and right back, giving Liverpool additional options in defence.

Liverpool have been hit by several injury problems ahead of the new season, with Joe Gomez suffering a muscle injury during the club’s pre season opener and expected to miss the Premier League clash against Newcastle.

Teenage centre back Giovanni Leoni is also sidelined with a long term anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Jeremy Jacquet, who joined Liverpool from Rennes for £60 million, has yet to feature in pre season following shoulder surgery. The defender also has limited top flight experience, having made fewer than 100 senior appearances.

With captain Virgil van Dijk currently the only fully fit senior centre back, Araujo’s arrival provides Liverpool with an experienced option at the back.

Araujo brings Barcelona experience

Araujo arrives at Anfield with considerable European experience after making more than 200 appearances for Barcelona since joining the Catalan club in 2018.

During his time at Barcelona, the Uruguay international won three La Liga titles and was appointed one of the club’s captains earlier this year.

However, his recent spell in Spain was affected by injuries and limited playing opportunities. He started only 11 La Liga matches last season.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick later confirmed that Araujo did not fit into his tactical plans, increasing the possibility of a move away from the club.
