Lagos State retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) have issued an August 31, 2026 deadline to the state government to pay their outstanding pension enhancement and wage award, threatening a major protest if their demands are not met.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that the retirees, under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS), Lagos State Council, said failure to resolve the matter within the stipulated period could lead to what they described as the “mother of all protests.”

The chairman of the union in Lagos, Michael Omisande, disclosed this after a meeting with the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Sunkanmi Oyegbola.
Omisande said the union submitted a proposal to the state government in January 2026 detailing how the pension enhancement should be implemented.
According to him, the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) later informed the union that approval had been granted for the engagement of an actuary to facilitate the process.
He, however, expressed concern that despite the steps taken, implementation and payment had yet to commence.
“We have communicated a 19-day ultimatum to Mr Governor to credit the accounts of pensioners on the pension increases/wage award, or face protest action tentatively fixed for August 31, 2026,” Omisande said.
He disclosed that the union had also informed the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, as well as the state Commissioner of Police about the proposed demonstration.
The notification, he explained, was aimed at ensuring adequate security during the planned protest.
The meeting was attended by the Director-General of LASPEC, Babalola Obilana, and the commission’s Executive Director of Finance, Muyiwa Oshin.
Obilana reportedly informed the pensioners that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had summoned him and given a directive regarding the issue. However, no specific date was announced for the commencement of payment.
Representatives of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Defined Benefit Scheme (NUPDBS), including Olufemi Olarewaju and Olukayode Bada, were also present at the meeting.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Funmi Sessi, urged LASPEC and the state government to expedite action on the matter to prevent the dispute from escalating.
Omisande added that the national leadership of the NUPCPS had endorsed the position of the Lagos council.
He further disclosed that the union planned to deploy both traditional and social media platforms to mobilise retirees ahead of the proposed protest.
“It is a sacrifice we must render for our financial emancipation. I strongly believe that the money can be paid if the government really wants to pay within the time frame,” he said.
Sessi also appealed to the state government to resolve the matter without further delay, stressing the need for relevant authorities to speed up the payment process and avert a confrontation with the retirees.
