Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, January 26, 2026, after formally resigning from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Eko Hot Blog reports that the decision was confirmed in a statement released on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, who said the move marks Yusuf’s political realignment with the ruling party at the federal level.

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf is rejoining the APC, a party he originally joined in 2014. He had emerged as the party’s senatorial candidate for Kano Central that year before stepping down in favour of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Explaining the development, the governor said his decision was informed by current governance realities, the need for national unity, and the pursuit of sustainable development, describing the return to APC as “strategic and necessary.”

Governor Yusuf noted that the APC remains a familiar and structured platform for progressive governance, adding that his return would strengthen collaboration with the Federal Government.
He expressed confidence that the move would fast-track infrastructural development, improve security coordination, and enhance service delivery across Kano State, while also promoting political stability and unity.
The statement further disclosed that the governor will formally register as an APC member alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.
The event will also feature the official launch of the APC electronic membership registration exercise in Kano State.

Meanwhile, the governor has relieved his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Sunusi Surajo, of his duties, in what observers describe as part of a broader political reshuffle following his exit from the NNPP.
Surajo, a former chairman of Madobi Local Government Area and a key figure within the Kwankwasiyya political structure, was replaced by a former aide to the immediate past governor and former APC national chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.
Governor Yusuf’s spokesperson confirmed the development via a social media update, although no official reason was given for the dismissal.
Sources at the Government House revealed that the action is linked to ongoing political realignments triggered by Yusuf’s resignation from the NNPP, a party he accused of internal crises and leadership instability.

In his resignation letter addressed to his ward chairman in Gwale Local Government Area, the governor said persistent disagreements and legal disputes within the NNPP had weakened the party’s unity and distracted it from serving the people.
Yusuf’s departure has since sparked a wave of defections, with 44 local government chairmen, 22 state lawmakers, and eight federal legislators openly declaring their support for him.
However, the mass movement has reportedly split the Kwankwasiyya bloc, as a senior political source disclosed that Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo has chosen to remain loyal to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and will not defect alongside the governor.
