Akin Abayomi Applauds Oba Adeniyi’s 10-year Reign, Stresses Benefits Of Ilera Eko Insurance Policy
By Babawale Solomon
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, Dr Akin Abayomi, has advocated for the Ilera Eko insurance policy.
He made a case for the policy on Sunday at the 10th coronation ceremony of HRM Oba Owolabi Adeshina Adeniyi, Maforunyomi 1, Oba of Igbobi Sabe, Lagos State.
Speaking with reporters, Abayomi congratulated the monarch on his 10-year reign, describing him as a man of the people and doling out advice to him.
“Oba Adeniyi is a gentle man, a benevolent ruler. We have a fantastic relationship; he reaches out to me, and I reach out to him. I had to be here to celebrate his 10th-year coronation anniversary with him,” he said.
“And to celebrate him as one of the greatest Monarchs in Lagos who has touched the hearts of the people, with their best interest in his heart. So I’m very happy to be here to celebrate this anniversary with our kabiyesi of Igbobi Sabe.
“His family is civil and friendly; his wife is a great person, a great queen. My advice to him is to keep ruling with humility, to keep reaching out, to be the gentleman that he is.”
Discussing the Infectious Disease Hospital, the biggest medical facility in Yaba, the Lagos health commissioner called for more collaboration with the king to achieve the government’s plans for the centre.
“We have a major medical facility in his constituency, that’s the Infectious Disease Hospital, so we always go to him for advice.
“It’s one of our biggest medical facilities, where we manage all our COVID patients, so we have great plans for this facility, but it’s under his jurisdiction. So my advice to him is that we move closer and closer because of the big plans we have for that facility to protect Lagos into the future.”
He spoke about the festive season and admonished that people keep themselves safe and healthy to avert the breakout of disease during this period.
“We are expecting a lot of people coming to Lagos for the festive season, as usual; we know there are rumbling outbreaks of respiratory disease all over the world. We must pay attention to sanitary conditions, good respiratory hygiene, making sure places are not too crowded, always washing our hands, keeping ourselves at a distance from people,” Abayomi said.
“If you’re sick, stay at home and get well before you start socializing because if you are socializing and you are not well, you are going to infect people.
“The idea is that we want an enjoyable Christmas, festive season, and new year. We don’t want too many people to get sick because we’re expecting a lot of social activities.”
The Lagos health commissioner also cited the benefits of the Ilera Eko insurance policy to residents.
“It’s a very good initiative for everyone to have Ilera Eko Insurance. It’s no longer a choice; it’s a mandatory requirement. The law now says that everybody living in Lagos should own Ilera Eko Insurance,” he stated.
“If you own insurance and you present to the hospital, a part of your expenses will be taken care of by the government. So it’s a safety net; every Lagosian must carry Ilera Eko for themselves and their families.”
“We are now beginning to advocate it very powerfully; we have put policies in place to make sure that all Lagosians have access to Ilera Eko, and if you have access to Ilera Eko, you have access to free health care.
“In this time and age when you get sick, it can collapse you as a person and drain your financial reserves. So it’s a kind of social safety net, very important to have insurance.”
