The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday announced that three seats in the 10th Senate have become vacant following the deaths of their occupants.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the affected constituencies include Enugu North, Nasarawa North, and Rivers South-East senatorial districts.

Speaking during plenary, Akpabio explained that the vacancies arose due to the passing of the lawmakers, in accordance with constitutional provisions.

He noted that the situation requires fresh elections to ensure proper representation for the affected districts.
He formally declared each of the seats vacant, citing relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Akpabio also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to organise by-elections to fill the positions within the legally required timeframe.

According to him, the electoral body is expected to conduct the polls within about 30 days from the date of the declaration.
The development paves the way for new political contests in the affected areas, as parties are expected to begin preparations to field candidates for the vacant seats in the Senate.
