Dabiri-Erewa described the situation as a misunderstanding, noting that tensions may have arisen from misinterpretations surrounding the event. She appealed to all parties involved to avoid escalation while investigations continue.
The incident reportedly followed a protest in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London, in the Eastern Cape. The protest was triggered after the coronation of a Nigerian national, Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko, as “Igwe Ndigbo na East London.”
Local South African groups and political organisations, including ActionSA and the Patriotic Alliance, expressed concern over the development. They argued that there is no constitutional backing for foreigners to assume traditional leadership titles within the province.

The groups, alongside civic organisations and traditional authorities, reportedly submitted a petition to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, calling for clarity and action on the matter.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to calm tensions and ensure the safety of Nigerians in the area as the situation is being reviewed.
