EKO HOT BLOG reports that the 24-year-old goalkeeper is now eligible to represent Nigeria following FIFA approval granted last month, with a potential invitation expected ahead of the Unity Cup and international friendlies against Portugal and Poland in June.
Okonkwo, who was born in Camden to Nigerian parents, previously represented England at youth level during his time with Arsenal before deciding to commit his international future to Nigeria.
Reports indicate that the Wrexham goalkeeper opted to play for the Super Eagles after holding discussions with Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle in London during the Unity Cup in June 2025, which Nigeria won.
Speaking in a video released by the Nigeria Football Federation, Okonkwo described the opportunity to represent Nigeria as a major honour.
“It’s an honour being allowed to play for your country. I am so excited, I can’t wait. To finally have the opportunity is incredible,” he said.
Okonkwo joins a competitive Super Eagles goalkeeping department currently led by Stanley Nwabali, with Francis Uzoho, Maduka Okoye, Amas Obasogie and young prospect Ebenezer Harcourt also in contention.
The goalkeeper came through Arsenal’s academy before spending time on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Austrian side Sturm Graz.
He later joined Wrexham on loan in 2023 before completing a permanent move the following year.
Since arriving at the Welsh club, Okonkwo has established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper, making 121 appearances and helping the team secure two promotions.

He featured in 44 matches across all competitions this season and recorded 10 clean sheets as Wrexham narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League.
