According to her, the Nigerian government has continued to closely monitor developments following demonstrations that took place in parts of Pretoria and Johannesburg between April 27 and 29, 2026.
She explained that South African authorities described the protests as largely peaceful, although security operatives reportedly deployed tear gas in some affected areas to manage the situation.
Despite the assurance that no Nigerian was killed during the protests, the minister confirmed that two Nigerians died in separate incidents unrelated to the demonstrations.

According to her, one Nigerian reportedly died after an encounter with soldiers, while another was found dead following an alleged confrontation with metro police authorities.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu described both incidents as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that the Nigerian government was already engaging relevant authorities through the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa to ensure proper investigation and justice.
The minister also warned that additional protests were expected between May 4 and 8, adding that Nigeria had summoned South Africa’s High Commissioner as part of ongoing diplomatic engagements over the situation.
She further disclosed that about 130 Nigerians had so far registered for voluntary evacuation back to Nigeria amid growing concerns over safety and tensions in parts of South Africa.
