The Academic Staff Union of Universities has called an emergency National Executive Council meeting in Abuja as tensions grow over unresolved negotiations with the Federal Government.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the meeting is being held today at the Festus Iyayi Building inside the University of Abuja, with chapter chairpersons and key leaders from universities across the country already in the capital as of Saturday.
Sources confirmed that both NEC members and zonal coordinators arrived ahead of the closed-door session.
A senior NEC member, who spoke to Sunday Punch anonymously because he was not authorised to brief the press, said the meeting will review the status of discussions currently ongoing between government representatives and ASUU leadership.
He explained that the union intends to update all chapter leaders on funding issues, welfare concerns, and other unresolved matters affecting public universities.
According to him, a major item on the agenda is whether the union will proceed with industrial action.
He noted that members across various campuses already have firm positions on the matter, but the final decision will be taken collectively after reviewing details of the government’s latest commitments.
“We will meet and take a final decision. Our stance has not changed. The government has been given enough time to clarify and rectify its previous positions,” the official said.
ASUU maintains that full implementation of the Nimi Briggs Committee report remains central to resolving the long-standing disputes that have repeatedly disrupted academic activities nationwide.
