The statement, signed by COPSUN’s acting chairman, Prof. Ayodeji Omole, came in response to the lingering dispute with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
ASUU has consistently demanded the implementation of the renegotiated 2009 FG-ASUU agreement, which includes better salaries, improved service conditions, adequate funding for universities, and university autonomy.
The pro-chancellors emphasized that the universities have not yet fully recovered from the disruptions of the last crisis.
To prevent fresh conflict, the pro-chancellors recommended that the government increase annual budgetary allocations to education and involve COPSUN representatives in all future negotiations and dispute resolutions.
The committee also advised university governing councils to operate strictly within the provisions of university laws to avoid unnecessary friction.
In a related development, the body commended the government for placing a moratorium on the proliferation of universities, a move they believe will help strengthen existing institutions.
